Bread of Life…and Chili Dogs

In Friends on 30.06.2008 at 2:11 pm

Saturday morning a small group of singles from our church went downtown to feed the homeless/poor. We are one of eight teams that works with Bread of Life ministries. This ministry has been serving lunches every Saturday afternoon for the past 20 years. Needless to say, they have a pretty well established reputation and we arrived Saturday afternoon to over a hundred people already waiting in line for chili dogs. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but simply offered chips and fruit cups along with a smile and “God bless you.” I was encouraged and humbled by the sincere “thank yous” we received throughout the day and could only pray that they were being blessed by more than simply the food we had to offer. Several of our team was talking with and praying for the men and women in line as they waited for their food and there was also a man who just showed up and started preaching up a little storm. After a while he started singing some old hymns and one of my friends Anne Elizabeth started singing with him. It was such a beautiful sight to behold as these two raised their hands in worship to the Lord right in the middle of the parking lot.

I pray that the Lord was glorified through our service and that as he is working in the hearts and lives of those men and women that I get more opportunities to be a small part of his greater plan.

I don’t have any pictures of the actual event, but here are a few fun ones of the prep time.

Kurtoskalács

When I was in Hungary I got these really cool tube pastries…they were a lot like a pretzel, but were cooked on a fat wooden dowel over open coals. My parents either had them once also or just liked the idea so a couple months back we decided to try our hand at making “kurtoskalács”. It was an interesting experiment as we didn’t have any of the necessary items to cook these little treats, but you know my dad… In McGyver fashion he soon had the barbque rigged to cook these tube pretzels. Of course our dowels were way to small and instead of open coals we were using a propane grill, but you start with what you have. We went online and after a little research and metric conversions we made our own version of the kurtoskalács dough. Though they were not nearly as good as the ones from Hungary it made for a fun family evening and who knows…maybe someday we will start selling them at the state fair or something. :)
Here are a few pictures from our little adventure…

This video is from a Hungarian cooking show, but even though most of you won’t understand …any of it, you can still get the idea of how they are made and why I think they are so much fun.

Recently Silas has figured out the idea behind the camera. So now, instead of running away from the camera, he will sit and pose himself to try to get you to take his picture. Last week he got Grandma Theresa to take his picture and he was putting his hands under his chin and tilting his head and …. you get he picture. I heard the story this morning and wanted to see if he would pose for me. This is what I got. Enjoy!

A couple weeks ago I attended a conference called New Attitude 2008 with a bunch of friends from my church. Every year this conference is an encouragement and inspiration in my walk with the Lord, but this year blessed me more than any other. The entire conference was on the Word of God from it’s inspiration, canonization and translation to it’s authority in our lives and our response subjectively and objectivly to it’s truth. I won’t attempt to explain it all, but will instead give you this link (http://www.newattitude.org/conference). Please take some time to download these and put them in your car or on your mp3 player. I know the Lord will bless you through this passionate and sound teaching.

For the sake of getting these pictures online…that is all I am going to say right now. Here are a few pictures and links to the rest of them on my web site.
